Afraid of Embarassing Your Characters?
Have you ever been afraid to write the truth cause you were afraid to embarass your character? Me too!! :D haha
The most important goal I have when writing, is to create my characters as human and honest as possible. Describe the itch on the backs of their necks, that prickling over the bridges of their noses as thy attempt to breathe away their tears, the chilling little goosebumps on their arms when a cold breeze sweeps at the air. Weave in the subtle flickers of thought and emotion we experience as humans, those subtle things woven together create a big picture. It creates character. It creates a human.
Now, humans are actually very disgusting. If your character got drunk, they aren’t going to throw up all nice and neat, are they? Cause vomit is smelly and chunky and has an acidy taste that gets stuck in your teeth and it spills on your clothes and hair. When people run, particularly for their lives, they might sweat in their armpits and down their backs. Cum is bitter and coppery and its’ thick and gummy, you can taste it on your breath, and that’s the truth.
The point is, don’t be afraid to embarass your characters just cause they’re your babies. And readers might actually appreciate an author tellin’ it straight for once, won’t they? I would :)
